- Regulate public security nationwide, including political and economic security and the security of computer information networks and other communications networks

At the central level, the Ministry of Public Security is China's principal police authority and with the Central Military Commission jointly administers the country's police, the People's Armed Police. The ministry has functional departments for areas such as intelligence, police operations, prisons, and political, economic, and communications security. Subordinate to the ministry are provincial-level public security departments, county-level public security bureaus and sub-bureaus (the bureaus are located in the prefectures and large cities, the sub-bureaus in counties and municipal districts), and township-level public security stations. MPS is responsible for counterespionage work and other state security, as well as conducting covert operations and cracking down on criminal activities that threaten state security. MPS also plays a significant role in cracking down on IPR violations, usually taking the lead in conducting raids on suspected IPR violators to seize goods.
