The General Administration of Sport (GAS) is responsible for drafting and implementing programs and regulations pertaining to China's sports activities. GAS directs and promotes sports administration reform, drafts the sports development strategy, and compiles mid- and long-term development plans.

GAS is also responsible for promoting national health-protection plans and directing and organizing sports activities across the nation. It implements national physical training standards and supervises public health in coordination with the Ministry of Health. GAS also plays a role in combating drug use among athletes. GAS responsibilities include overseeing sports activities with foreign associations and teams, and sports-related cooperation and communication with countries and regions outside the mainland. GAS also organizes and hosts major international athletic competitions.

GAS also manages the national sports industry policy related to sports marketing, and issues policies and regulations governing sports-related business activities.
