The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) was founded in February 1986 with State Council approval and is now directly administered by the State Council. NSFC's main responsibilities include promoting and financing basic research and applied research in China through the National Natural Science Fund, as well as developing cooperative relations with science foundations and relevant scientific organizations in other countries and regions. The PRC government allocates NSFC's main funds. In 2006, NNSF's annual funds totaled RMB 4.5 billion ($595 million).

In terms of organization, NSFC includes seven scientific departments and five bureaus, two offices, and four units directly under its jurisdiction; NSFC directly employs 184 people. It does not have any research entity of its own. All personnel are experts in science, technology, or management, and are appointed for a four-year term.
