Wu Dingfu

Wu Dingfu is chair of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC), a position he has held since October 2002. Wu developed his career as an auditing and financial oversight official, ultimately serving as the secretary general of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI). Wu first gained experience in the insurance industry via a posting as CIRC executive vice chair.

Wu was born in 1946 in Wuxue, Hubei. He joined the CCP in April of 1972. Wu graduated in 1967 with a degree in Chinese literature from the continuing education program under Hubei University. Wu spent his early career in Guangji County in Hubei, first as deputy mayor and then mayor and party secretary. Wu was then promoted to vice director of Hubei's Huanggang Prefecture before rising to serve in the Hubei provincial-level auditing regulatory apparatus. Wu worked as deputy director and then director of the Hubei Auditing Bureau and then director of the Hubei Auditing Office.

In October 1995, Wu was appointed a party member of the central National Auditing Bureau. He was also appointed head of the inspection office of the CCP CCDI office within the National Auditing Bureau. Wu next served as a CIRC executive vice chair (rank of vice minister) from November 1998 to January 2000. His next position was that of executive commissioner and secretary general of the CCP CCDI. Wu returned to CIRC in October 2002 as chair. The same year he was chosen as an alternate member of the 16th CCP Central Committee. Wu assumed the rank of minister in March 2003 when CIRC was upgraded to a ministry-level agency.
