CAS is one of several academic think tanks directly under the State Council. Its duties are similar to those of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in that the two organizations focus on advancing the science and technology capacity of the state. CAS has a slightly broader scope.
- Undertake basic and strategic research;
- Develop strategic scientific goals for the national economy, particularly those that pertain to national modernization and strategic development goals;
- Provide access to high-level scientific and technological data;
- Promote the development of the nation's high-tech industry, encourage the technological progress of China's traditional industries, and provide a solid foundation for improving enterprise technological capabilities;
- Offer consultations and suggestions for state macro development plans;
- Manage leading scientific research teams composed of international and domestic scholars to conduct various research;
- Coordinate domestic and overseas academic exchanges and cooperation.
