CMA manages and supervises weather-related affairs throughout China, including formulating, implementing, and supervising the implementation of policies, regulations, and technical standards. CMA is also responsible for implementing nationwide disaster preparedness programs so that all Chinese citizens have a plan of action in the event of a weather-related emergency. In the event of severe weather, CMA works with the central government to coordinate relief and clean up. From a commercial standpoint, CMA reviews all weather-related project or development proposals. It also oversees procurement for all climate information networks and weather stations, offices, and infrastructure equipment.

CMA represents China at the World Meteorological Organization and other international meteorological bodies and coordinates international exchanges with meteorological counterparts in other countries.
