Forecasting the US-China trade relationship and why it’s important to Arkansas
The US-China commercial relationship is at a crucial juncture. Over $500 billion in reciprocal tariffs remain in place, weighing on US competitiveness, jobs and economic growth. Trade tensions have increasingly blurred the lines between commercial and national security domains. Yet China remains the United States’ third largest trade partner, and Arkansas’ fourth largest. In 2019, Arkansas exports to China supported over 5,000 American jobs. While there are challenges that must be addressed, China is the worlds’ second largest economy that is too dynamic to ignore.
The Latest Developments in US-China Investment and Sanctions
The Trump administration dramatically stepped up efforts to monitor and manage cross-border transactions with China, and it is increasingly clear that this remains a top priority for the Biden administration. Companies and investors should expect that the Biden team will continue to use every tool at its disposal, including economic sanctions, US export control laws, and reviews of past and pending transactions by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to achieve its policy objectives.

In 2020, the global economy underwent significant economic shifts, and the US-China commercial relationship was no exception. Early in the year, the United States and China signed and implemented the Phase One trade agreement and halted tariff escalations for the first time in two years. Last year saw a healthy recovery of goods exports to China, though services exports—the data for which lag a year behind—have fallen for the first time since 2003.
