Xu joined IWEP (Institute of World Economics and Politics), CASS (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences) since 2008, and becomes a senior research fellow since 2011. Now, he is the head of Economic Development Division in IWEP. In 2012, he also took up the role of advisor to the international collaboration department in Ministry of Finance of PRC. Xu also sits in the work team of Global Macroeconomy in IWEP. This work team issues a quarterly report on world economy, and he is responsible for the research on China’s economy and macro policies since 2012. Since 2019, he serves as the head of research director of CF40(Finance 40 Forum). In the same year, he became one of the specialists of 100 Economists of Quarterly Confidence Survey held by NSB (National Statistical Bureau).
He has published 60 academic papers, hundreds of columns mostly published in leading medias in Chinese but also in Financial Times, Financial World in English. Five books have been published on China’s economy and international financial topic. Qiyuan has been a visiting fellow at CIGI (2014), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2014), Bruegel (2013), Hitotsubashi University (2009), and the Institute of International Monetary Affairs(IIMA) at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (2011).
