Chinese: 李干杰

Title: CCP Central Committee Member; Minister of Ecological Environment

Salutation: Minister Li

Li Ganjie is minister of Ecological Environment, a position he assumed in 2018. Prior to this appointment, Li was deputy minister of Environmental Protection (MEP) from 2008-2016. After serving briefly as deputy party chief of Hebei Province from 2016-2017, Li was named MEP minister in 2017, becoming the youngest ministerial-level member of the State Council. Prior to joining MEP, Li held leadership positions specializing in nuclear safety, including head of the National Nuclear Safety Administration. Minister Li oversees the Ministry of Ecological Environment, which effectively replaced MEP in 2018.

Li led MEP efforts to tighten curbs on smog through 2020, following a crackdown on pollution that helped China achieve air quality targets during the previous five years. As ecological environment minister, Li heads China’s emissions reduction, climate change, and other major environmental protection policy responsibilities, as well as marine conservation and agricultural pollution. At the 2018 National People’s Congress (NPC), Li said that fighting pollution is one of three critical battles outlined by President Xi Jinping.
