Shanghai: China's Labor Policy Landscape: "Dispatched" Workers, Collective Bargaining, and Other Labor Challenges
Amendments to Labor Contract Law took effect July 1, 2013, significantly altering the way employers use temporary workers. The All China Federation of Trade Unions continues to pressure companies to form unions and engage in collective bargaining. The rapid change of China’s labor policy environment continues apace prompting companies to again evaluate their corporate policies to ensure both compliance and cost effective human resource strategies.
USCBC hosted a breakfast program that explored these and other current trends in labor relations.
Washington: 40th Annual Membership Meeting
General Brent Scowcroft, president of the Scowcroft Group and former national security advisor for presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, offered the keynote at the luncheon of the US-China Business Council’s (USCBC) 40th Annual Membership Meeting, expressing optimism and confidence in the future of the US-China relationship.
Beijing China Operations Conference 2013
The US-China Business Council (USCBC) invited an array of experts from industry, media, and the Chinese government to address its membership at its annual Beijing China Operations Conference, held on May 30. More than 70 USCBC member company executives participated in a day of discussion on important operational issues, including adjustments to Chinese foreign investment policies, best practices for expanding into 2nd- and 3rd-tier cities, the outlook for the Chinese economy in 2013, and new trends in the field of government affairs.
Washington: Pre-S&ED Briefing featuring State and Treasury Officials
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, US-China Business Council, and Coalition of Services Industries hosted a pre-S&ED briefing with Kin Moy, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Sharon Yuan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Treasury, and Robert Dohner, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Treasury, on Tuesday, May 21 from 3:00 to 4:30 pm.
Washington: Welcome Reception and Dinner for Ambassador Cui Tiankai
The US-China Business Council and U.S. Chamber of Commerce hosted their first public engagement with China's new ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Cui Tiankai. At the reception, corporate members met Ambassador Cui and other embassy officials. Ambassador Cui offered brief remarks on the state of our bilateral commercial relationship and ways to continue engagement with the US business community.
Washington: Chinese Embassy Speaker Series: DCM Deng Hongbo
The US-China Business Council (USCBC) announced a new speaker series with key officials from the Chinese Embassy. These events provide USCBC members with an opportunity to interact with senior embassy officials from various sections to introduce what they do and discuss the key issues they are working on.
To launch the series, USCBC was pleased to welcome Minister Deng Hongbo, deputy chief of mission at the Embassy, to join us. Minister Deng focused his remarks on the outcomes of the National People’s Congress and the Embassy’s priorities for 2013.
Washington Briefing on the Administrative Licensing Dialogue
US companies continue to face challenges in obtaining administrative licenses and approvals to grow their business in China. These administrative licensing challenges rank second among the top 10 issues US-China Business Council (USCBC) members face in China, according to USCBC’s 2012 survey.
Washington: China Bilateral Investment Treaty Negotiations Briefing
The US-China Business Council hosted a briefing on China Bilateral Investment Treaty negotiations. Daniel Bahar, Director of Investment Affairs at the Office of the US Trade Representative, and Michael Tracton, Director of the Office of Investment Affairs at the US State Department, provided an update on the state of negotiations and discuss key issues at play.
Washington: Dinner in Honor of Vice Premier Wang Qishan
Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan highlighted US companies’ concerns about discriminatory treatment in the China market and the global economic leadership of the United States and China in his remarks at a dinner co-hosted by the US-China Business Council (USCBC) on December 19. The dinner, which followed the close of the US-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT), was attended by more than 250 individuals, including Wang, Commerce Minister Chen Deming, and nearly 20 other senior Chinese officials from a variety of Chinese government agencies.
