Miao Wei currently serves as the Minister of Information and Industry Technology (MIIT), a position he has held since 2010. He has been a member of the CCP Central Committee since 2012, and previously served as an alternate member of the Central Committee.
Born in Beijing in 1955, Miao Wei began working in 1974 when he was sent to Anhui Province as a rusticated youth during the Cultural Revolution. He studied internal combustion engines at Hefei University of Technology, graduating in 1982. Miao began his career in the automotive industry, performing roles in sales and manufacturing. He later served as the deputy director of the Automobile Department and assistant general engineer at the former Ministry of Machine-Building Industry.
In 1997, Miao became party secretary of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, one of China’s largest state-owned automobile manufacturers. Two years later, he took on the additional role of general manager. Miao is credited with turning the company around to become profitable, adopting Western management techniques and forging alliances with foreign automotive companies during his time there. In 2005, Miao joined the Standing Committee of the Hubei Provincial Party Committee and became party secretary of Wuhan, where Dongfeng is headquartered. Three years later in 2008, he transitioned to MIIT to serve as vice minister and deputy party secretary.
