A currency agreement would likely follow one that was largely agreed in February by Washington and Beijing that would parallel China’s prior G20 pledges to avoid currency manipulation to gain a trade advantage, said Craig Allen, president of the US-China Business Council. “It’s time to roll that thing out,” said Allen, who also met with Liu on Wednesday. “It would be a positive, and would make it easier for the US side to sign a deal.”

US-China Business Council President Craig Allen, who met with Mr. Liu in Washington on Wednesday, said China’s top negotiator “seemed to take a very pragmatic view on what could be expected from the US in terms of producing a balanced agreement and noted this would be a process rather than a single deal that would resolve all issues.”

US stock futures were slightly lower today ahead of the talks, as investors and other policymakers professed little hope that the discussions would lead to much. “It’s unrealistic to think we’re going to solve all the issues in one go,” Craig Allen, the president of the US-China Business Council, told the WSJ. “We have too many issues.”
