China's National People's Congress 2014 reviewed by Brunswick

Analysis from Brunswick's St. John Moore on China's National People's Congress (NPC). Their analysis suggests this year’s meeting was significant.  It marked the end of the first full year in office of Li Keqiang as premier and reinforced a commitment to continuing economic liberalisation, reducing bureaucratic red tape, fighting corruption and enhancing the role of market forces.  Reform was front and centre throughout the gathering.
 
Premier Li outlined wide ranging reforms that will increase the role of market forces and adjust the role of government.  Multiple sectors were also mentioned by Li and other officials at the meetings as part of the reform agenda – from finance to healthcare.  Premier Li also noted the impact the economic growth model has had on the environment and the need to evolve the model – “the environment has become a major problem, which is nature's red-light warning against the model of inefficient and blind development”.
