New Report: US-China Trade War 2.0 Poised to Devastate American Exporters
More than $140 billion worth of American exports and hundreds of thousands of jobs at stake in latest trade war
WASHINGTON—April 29, 2025—All American goods exports to China, worth $140.7 billion in 2024, are now subject to at least a 125% retaliatory Chinese tariff, the latest development in a dangerous new trade war that will devastate American exporters and undermine America’s global competitiveness, according to the 2025 Export Report from the US-China Business Council (USCBC). China imposed these tariffs in response to tariffs the United States imposed on China.
Agriculture and energy products are the United States’ largest exports to China and are among the hardest hit by product-specific retaliatory tariffs. These product-specific tariffs affect more than $35 billion worth of American exports. Companies, workers, and farmers in the American Midwest and South are the most exposed to those tariffs.
US exports to China support 862,467 jobs across the United States. Sectors whose China exports support the most jobs include agriculture, aerospace and aviation, semiconductors, education, and travel and tourism, all of which are now at a severe risk as trade between the United States and China rapidly declines.
“The real-time, precipitous decline in US exports to China is further evidence that US businesses, farmers, ranchers, workers, and consumers are reeling from the ongoing trade war between the United States and China. This two-way tariff shock feels like a 2018 flashback, except worse. No one is spared this time.” said Sean Stein, USCBC president.
“If these tariffs remain in place, trade between the two countries will fall precipitously, sacrificing billions of dollars of exports and hundreds of thousands of American jobs, potentially destabilizing the US economy, and significantly weakening America’s global competitiveness. We urge leaders from both countries to come to the negotiating table and take immediate steps to remove or scale back these tariffs. Lowering the tariff ‘temperature’ is the first step toward protecting US exports and making progress on the longstanding structural issues that disadvantage American companies doing business in China.”
Established in 1973, USCBC represents many of the world’s most iconic brands operating in China and for more than 50 years has advocated on behalf of its members, while promoting the many benefits of commercial exchange between the United States and China.

“美国对华出口的实时大幅下滑，进一步证明美国企业、农民、牧场主、工人和消费者正在承受美中两国贸易战的沉重冲击。”美中贸易全国委员会会长谭森（Sean Stein）认为，“此次双向关税冲击仿佛是2018年的重演，然而情况更为严峻。这一次，无人能够幸免。”
他还表示：“若这些关税持续存在，两国贸易将面临断崖式下滑，将牺牲数百亿美元出口、数十万就业岗位，进而有可能动摇美国经济的稳定性，并严重削弱美国的全球竞争力。我们呼吁两国领导人能够展开谈判，立即采取行动取消或降低相关关税。只有先为关税争端‘降温’，才能进而保护美国出口，推动解决制约美企在华发展的长期结构性问题。”
