US-China Business Council Statement on Presidential Memo on
China and Intellectual Property
Washington, D.C. – US-China Business Council President John Frisbie today issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s memorandum directing USTR Robert Lighthizer to determine whether China’s policies and practices harm US intellectual property, innovation or technology:
“The requirement to transfer technology as a condition to gain market access in China is an important issue that needs to be addressed. The issue is an acute concern of American companies in key sectors, who often must make difficult choices about managing the trade-off of technology sharing and access to the world’s second largest economy. The protection of intellectual property rights, a particular strength of the innovative American private sector, is also critical.”
“President Trump’s action today sets in motion an opportunity to resolve these important issues. USCBC looks forward to working with the Trump administration on this process and in developing an effective solution, and encourages the Chinese government to do the same. Forced technology transfer and IP theft run counter to market-based principles. Removing these harmful practices will positively contribute to building a stronger and more durable commercial relationship.”
The US-China Business Council (USCBC) is a private, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization of roughly 200 American companies that do business with China.
