AI Applications Intern

Washington, DC

The US-China Business Council (USCBC) is a private, nonpartisan, trade association of nearly 270 American companies that do business with China. USCBC is seeking an AI-focused intern to support the organization’s ongoing rollout of AI tools and workflows across its Washington, DC and China offices.

This is a newly created role for someone who wants hands-on experience helping a mission-driven organization adopt AI thoughtfully and effectively. The intern will report directly to the Senior Operations Manager (Administration Department) and will work closely with staff across departments to understand how their workflows operate, support active pilots, and help build tools and workflows that turn AI capability into real operational value. This role suits someone who can move fluidly between hands-on technical work and translating what’s technically possible into what’s practical for a trade association’s day-to-day operations.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Interview and survey staff across departments to document workflows and identify practical AI use cases; support the design, rollout, and evaluation of AI pilots.
  • Research and compare AI tools and vendors (e.g., transcription tools, CRM-integrated AI features) against USCBC’s needs and data security requirements.
  • Build and test lightweight internal tools or automations, under the guidance of the Senior Operations Manager, and draft clear staff-facing documentation and training materials.
  • Track project status, open decisions, and timelines across the AI rollout, and help prepare updates for leadership.
  • Other AI-related and administrative duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Candidates must either be a US citizen or currently authorized to work in the US (CPT & OPT welcomed).
  • Full time or part time intern makes a 6-12 month commitment from start date and is able to work remotely with reliable internet on non-office days.
  • Demonstrated depth in AI beyond casual chatbot use — e.g., understanding of how LLMs work, RAG, or agentic workflows — through coursework, independent study, projects, or dedicated hobbyist engagement.
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding or agentic tools and basic scripting or automation preferred.
  • Approaches AI adoption with security at the forefront, treating data security, privacy, and confidentiality as a core part of evaluating any tool.
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for staff without technical backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, initiative, and flexibility working across multiple workstreams with incomplete information.
  • Interest in international business, US-China relations, or trade association operations is a plus.
