WASHINGTON, DC, Nov 24, 2020 – The US-China Business Council (USCBC) has promoted Melinda Xu to the new role of Shanghai Chief Representative to lead the office’s efforts supporting US companies doing business in China amidst one of the most challenging periods in recent history for the bilateral relationship.

USCBC President Craig Allen warmly welcomed Xu to the new role. “Melinda has established herself as a leader in our organization and this promotion is a reflection of her outstanding work and continued support of American businesses across China.”

Xu joined USCBC over four years ago and has progressively advanced through the organization, including roles in Business Advisory Services and then leading its Shanghai government affairs team. She will spearhead USCBC’s work engaging with municipal and provincial governments across China, while helping businesses navigate policy and regulatory changes that impact China’s operating environment. Xu replaces Owen Haacke, who returned to the United States after more than 6 years with USCBC in Shanghai.

USCBC Vice President of China Operations Matthew Margulies noted Xu’s track record of leadership and excellence. “Melinda has played key roles supporting US companies at critical times. Members will undoubtedly benefit from her larger role in the organization,” he noted. “She has facilitated members’ re-opening efforts during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, supported member exports of PPE from China, and helped members’ foreign staff navigate the complex process to return to China.”

Xu discussed her excitement for the new role. “The most rewarding part of this work for me is helping members resolve specific and complex challenges they are facing. I have a passion for providing great services to our members.”

Prior to joining USCBC, Melinda worked as a project leader in the telecommunications industry, where she managed marketing for household broadband, brand operations, and cross-platform strategic collaboration for a major Chinese telecom operator. She also studied at Johns Hopkins -Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies.
