WASHINGTON—OCT 30, 2025—Following today’s meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping in South Korea, USCBC President Sean Stein expressed his optimism that the two leaders’ agreement lays the ground for a deeper and more sustainable trade pact.

Today’s US-China trade announcement is very encouraging. America’s reduction of the fentanyl-related tariffs and China’s commitment to take strong action to curb fentanyl precursors have paved the way for a reopening of China’s market for US agriculture and energy and a wider, mutually beneficial trade agreement.

“Washington’s decision to suspend the implementation of the BIS 50% rule and Beijing’s decision to pause its October 9 export controls are especially welcome news. We applaud both presidents for these important breakthroughs.

“We hope that future negotiations will address long-standing market access barriers, help level the playing field for US companies, and bring long-term predictability to the bilateral trade relationship.”

The US-China Business Council (USCBC) is a private, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization of American companies that do business in China. Established in 1973, USCBC represents many of the world’s most iconic brands and for more than 50 years has advocated on behalf of US business while promoting the many benefits of commercial exchange between the US and China.
