Senior Vice President, China Operations

The US-China Business Council (USCBC) is seeking a full-time senior vice president to lead its China operations out of its Beijing or Shanghai office. This role is a unique position in China, which requires expertise in business advisory services, trade policy advocacy and analysis, programming, team management and more. The individual will act as the seniormost representative of the USCBC (and its member firms & interests) in China.
USCBC is a private, non-profit organization of more than 260 American companies that do business with China. USCBC has provided unmatched information, advisory, advocacy, and program services to its membership since its founding in 1973. Through its offices in Washington, DC; Beijing; and Shanghai, USCBC is uniquely positioned to serve its members’ interests in the United States and China.
Responsibilities:
- Manage staff, budgets and resources in USCBC’s Beijing and Shanghai offices;
- Regularly consult with USCBC’s President and senior staff in the Washington, DC office to coordinate on China strategy, deliverables, communications, etc.;
- Assume final responsibility for the quality and delivery of USCBC services in China;
- Develop relationships and advocate for USCBC priorities with key Chinese government officials, senior US and Chinese business leaders, US embassy officials, and visiting US government officials to facilitate US-China business relations and advance USCBC positions;
- Oversee the development and execution of China-based research, reporting, and programming on trends of importance to US businesses operating in China;
- Ensure the coordination of services between the China offices and USCBC headquarters in the United States;
- Develop and implement appropriate employee attraction, retention, and motivation policies within the China offices, in coordination with USCBC headquarters;
- Professionally and responsibly represent USCBC positions in media engagements;
- Engage in business development activities: proactively lead new member recruitment; meet or exceed annual recruitment targets; document regular engagement with assigned retention targets;
- Assume final responsibility for administration, regulatory filing and compliance, and budget of both China offices;
- Work closely with colleagues across all three USCBC offices to ensure consistency, collaboration and inclusivity in all verticals (business advisory services, government affairs, programs, etc).
- Other responsibilities as assigned by direct supervisor, the USCBC President, based in Washington DC.
Qualifications:
- At least 10 years of relevant working experience, including time based in China and managing staff in China;
- Deep, well established understanding of the China market, including key China business & government affairs issues for American and multinational companies;
- Maturity, professionalism and appropriate seniority to represent the USCBC before senior members of the Chinese government, US government, and global corporate executives, including multinational CEOs;
- Keen understanding of the US government, trade policy and corporate environment,
- Excellent communication and public presentation skills, including proven writing/editing skills;
- Bilingual speaker with working fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese (oral and reading);
- Experience developing and executing high quality, substantive programs and events
- Outgoing, entrepreneurial mindset to build USCBC membership, visibility, and programs;
- Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills with proven leadership ability;
- A high degree of initiative, professionalism, sense of responsibility, and dedication to quality;
- Ability and willingness to regularly travel domestically in China, as well as possible international travel to the US and APAC
- Established networks in the US and China, in business, government, the international community etc. are considered an asset
