The US-China Business Council (USCBC) is a private, non-profit, membership organization of more than 270 American companies that do business with China. Founded in 1973 following the first formal exchanges between the United States and China by a group of interested companies, USCBC’s mission is to expand the US-China commercial relationship to the benefit of its membership and, more broadly, the US economy. Through close collaboration between offices in Washington, DC, Beijing, and Shanghai, USCBC provides extensive China-focused public policy advocacy, information, business advisory services, along with events, to its multinational member companies.

USCBC’s US Government Affairs (GA) team in Washington, DC seeks a part-time intern to assist with research and policy monitoring on China-related developments in the US executive and legislative branch. The job is a paid internship requiring a 20 hour per week commitment through the rest of the year with the option to extend. Interns are expected to work partially in the office and partially from home and therefore must be based out of the DC-metro area for the entire internship. Applicants must have US work authorization for the internship.

Primary responsibilities

  • Research and monitor US congressional engagement on China, including tracking, summarizing, and maintaining a database of relevant legislation
  • Report on US executive branch developments related to the bilateral trade and commercial relationship
  • Track and summarize the China and trade positions of key government officials
  • Help government affairs team prepare for and take notes on meetings with the legislative and executive branch
  • Assist with various research tasks
  • Provide administrative/program support as required

Required qualifications

  • Persons with graduate degree or undergraduate degree are welcome to apply
  • Knowledge of, or strong interest in US executive and legislative process. Experience interning on Capitol Hill or in a US government agency is a plus
  • Strong interest in US-China economic and commercial issues
  • Strong research, writing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain high-quality work products in fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and spoken English. Native English-language proficiency strongly preferred
  • Proactive, self-driven, team player with strong communications skills, and ability to learn quickly
