The US-China Business Council’s (USCBC) annual report on US State Exports to China released today shows that the world’s second largest economy continues to be an important market for the economic health of American companies and farmers. In 2015, US goods exports to China reached $113 billion, making it the third-largest export market for US goods behind Canada and Mexico, America’s neighbors and NAFTA partners.

When I met with senior economic Chinese officials in March, they specifically mentioned that Britain’s possible exit from the European Union, their second largest trading partner, was something they were watching closely. It is no surprise to see that China has called for a calm and deliberative response to the breaking Brexit news.

As the eighth annual Strategic & Economic Dialogue (S&ED) in Beijing concludes, I am pleased to hear that China’s updated BIT negative list offer will likely come next week.  This long-awaited revision has the potential to significantly reduce market access barriers for American companies in China, and is an essential component of the high-standard BIT that USCBC’s member companies desire.
